4WD Exploration of Utah’s Color Country

Borrego Springs, CA – From September 16-23, 2009, Anza-Borrego Institute’s Desert Hostel will explore towering sandstone cliffs, fossils, sculptured rock formations, dinosaur-bearing river systems, and more. A delightful smooth-water raft trip on the Colorado River serves as the culmination to the week-long educational excursion. Families with children age 10 and older welcome. Cost is $1,295 per person, double occupancy (single supplement $250) and includes lodging, instruction, all activities and most meals. ABFI members pay $1,245. Memberships start at $25. Participants provide their own 4-wheel-drive transportation. Book by July 31. Photos are available upon request. www.theABF.org/utah

Participants venture into Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion National Parks, the ideal setting for geology enthusiasts, hikers, photographers, and naturalists. Field geologist and retired state park ranger Paul Remeika will lead this seven-day introduction to the geology and paleontology of the southwestern Colorado Plateau and Colorado River. Professional photographer Paul Johnson will give tips on capturing the spectacular scenery on camera.

Each year, the Institute’s Desert Hostel tour explores a new part of the country and how the geography of that area has impacted the Anza-Borrego region. 2007 Desert Hostel participant Mary Ekelund, of Wisconsin, will attend again this year with her husband. “We have waited two years for this tour to Capitol Reef with Paul [Remeika]. We know he will make it an adventure full of learning and fun. We’re thrilled.”
