ABDSP Interpretive Activities

All activities meet in front of the ABDSP Visitor Center unless otherwise specified.

8:30 a.m. Hike – Big Spring Ramble                                2.5 Hours
Join Volunteer Naturalist Ted Caragozian to discover an oasis in the transition zone and see what’s blooming.  Meet at the pullout at mile 11.3 on highway S-22 for an easy-paced walk to Big Spring in Tubb Canyon. Wear sturdy footwear, a hat, and carry water. This hike is rated moderate.
10:00 a.m. Walk  - Desert Inspiration                                                                    45 Minutes
Join Regina Reiter, Park Interpretive Specialist for a brief sampling of poetry and prose inspired by the desert. Then, be inspired yourself by a short, inspiring walk near the Visitor Center. You may even compose your own poem!  Meet in the Discovery Lab of the Visitor Center.  Ages 10 and up.
3:00 p.m. Talk – Geology With an Emphasis on Plate Tectonics                                    1 Hour
Emeritus Geology Professor Myrl Beck will present a lecture on the boundaries and motions of the plate in the Earth’s crust and how our mountains came to be. Dr. Beck has done extensive research in the Andes and other areas. Meet in the Discovery Lab with the Naturalist Society. Everyone is welcome.
