ABF Volunteer, Mark Jorgensen, Wins First Place in
Cox Conserves Heroes Program

Borrego Springs, CA – Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) is proud to announce that Mark Jorgensen, a California State Parks retiree and devoted ABF volunteer, was awarded First Place in the adult category of the 2010 Cox Conserves Heroes Program. Mark will donate his prize, a $10,000 grant from Cox Communications, to Anza-Borrego Foundation.

The winners were announced at a ceremony hosted by Cox Communications and Hotel Solamar in downtown San Diego and recognized on the Petco Park field at the June 29th Padres game. The first-place adult and youth winners also received proclamations from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors at their July 13th meeting.

Mark has devoted hundreds of volunteer hours to help preserve land and habitat in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Mark was instrumental in creating ABF’s Camp Borrego, where each year more than 300 underserved fifth-graders participate in free three-day camps to learn about geology, paleontology, archaeology, astronomy, endangered species and global sustainability. Mark also led the charge in an annual field count of endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep.

Created by Cox Communications in partnership with the Trust for Public Land, the Cox Conserves Heroes program featured an online nomination and voting process for the public to select San Diego's environmental heroes. The program is sponsored by Think Blue San Diego and Kyocera Communications, Inc. with media partner KYXY 96.5 FM.
