Pleistocene World: Open House at the Paleontology Laboratory

Looking out over the Anza-Borrego Desert from Fonts Point, it is hard to imagine that 2.6 million years ago this was a lush land with lots of water. Rivers, streams, lakes, swamps and rainfall were abundant. This land supported a large population of animals, birds, fish and plants. What happened? Where did the flora (plants) and fauna (animals) go? What caused the change in environment?

Come and visit the Paleontology Laboratory and we will give you information to help you answer some of these questions. We will have exhibits on animals that are extinct (mammoth, giant ground sloth, saber tooth cat, teratorn), smaller animals whose relatives are still here today (coyote, rabbit, ground squirrel, birds and fish). We will also have an exhibit to see if you can tell the difference between a modern bone and a fossil bone. There will be volunteers to talk to you about climate, geology, 3D imaging, photogrammetry, and other interesting activities.
