04/16/2011 - 4:00pm
Location:
Meet at Borrego Palm Canyon Campground Kiosk

Instructor: Tony Soares
Fee: $65 / $55 for ABF members

For more than 2000 years, the native people of the Desert Southwest constructed composite arrows from carrizo cane, hardwood, stone, sinew, and feathers. In this hands-on class, instructor Tony Soares will teach the techniques used to make these light-weight and fast-flying arrows used for hunting and defensive purposes.

Soares has over 30 years of experience in survival bow and arrow techniques. He will teach arrow straightening, flint knapping, fletching, and discussing bows and atlatls. (The atlatl was a dart thrower used 10,000 years before the bow and arrow in the Americas. The darts for the atlatls are the same as the arrow, but much longer.) Tools provided but feel free to bring along your preferred pocket knife. All primitive techs welcome.

Caution: this is a hands-on class where you will use sharp objects and stone tools. If you are able, please bring eye protection. Some safety goggles will be available.
