Join us for a captivating gathering as we explore the cultural history of our southern California desert. The weekend of events will include a reception, speakers, field trips, and poster presentations.

The Colorado Desert Cultural Symposium will include a program of accomplished speakers on various cultural subjects including history, ethnography, prehistory, and archaeology of the region. The event will provide an opportunity for students, professional and amateur researchers and scientists, park lovers, and desert enthusiasts to come together to learn about the diverse research that has taken place in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding Colorado Desert.

Symposium Agenda

Welcome Reception & Poster Presentations
Friday, November 1
6:00 - 9:00 PM

Symposium welcome reception will feature research posters from students and professionals. Refreshments and appetizers will be served. The event will take place at the Borrego Art Institute on Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs.

Symposium Presentations
Saturday, November 2
7:00 AM - 5:00 PM

A full day of presentations will be held at Borrego Springs Resort in the De Anza Ballroom. View Saturday's Detailed Agenda

Banquet Dinner
Saturday, November 2
6:30 - 8:45 PM

A banquet dinner will take place at The Arches Restaurant at Borrego Springs Resort. Keynote speaker Julia Bendimez Patterson's presentation will begin at 8:00 PM back in the De Anza Ballroom.

Symposium Field Tours
Sunday, November 3
Times will vary

Join us Sunday morning for field tours to various locations within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Your choice of trip is included with Symposium registration and your selection will be made at program check-in. Breakfast is on your own. Trips are rain or shine.

The cost of the symposium includes the Friday welcome reception, Saturday lectures, breakfast and lunch, and Sunday field tour.

For symposium attendees, Borrego Springs Resort is offering the preferred room rate of $139 per deluxe room (per night, plus tax). Call 760-767-5700 to make your reservation. Please refer to the "Anza Borrego Foundation rate" when booking.

 

Call For Posters

If you are conducting cultural research in the Anza-Borrego region, we invite you to submit a poster for consideration for our poster reception. Posters will be featured during the Friday evening welcome reception.

Posters are sought on original research in history, ethnography, prehistory, and archaeology of the region.

Submit abstracts by September 30, 2013 to info@theabf.org using the form to the right. Include “Poster Submission” in the email subject.  Posters can be horizontal or vertical and should not exceed 36” x 48”. Direct questions to info@theabf.org.
