Piedras Grandes (Big Rocks), in the southern part of ABDSP, is one of the soon-to-be designated Cultural Preserves in the Park. Join a Colorado Desert District archaeologist and a Colorado Desert Archaeology Society volunteer for a full day of adventure and gain new perspectives of this rocky landscape. Piedras Grandes has a wealth of cultural resources, both historic and prehistoric and is the location of the “Horse and Rider” pictograph. It was chosen as one of the first Cultural Preserves for good reason – find out why!
We will meet at 9 AM at the entrance to Morteros Wash (at its intersection with S-2) and drive past a volcanic landscape, through washes, over rocky roads and cross a railroad track to the Piedras Grandes trail head. We will hike about 2.5 miles round-trip on a flat terrain, but at a fairly moderate grade. Four-wheel or high-clearance vehicles are required (we will encourage ride-sharing from the point where we will meet). Wear good hiking shoes, sun screen, and a hat. Bring a jacket, lunch and snacks, and plenty of water. Expect to return to the meeting point on S-2 by about 3:30 PM. Note: it takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get to the entrance to Morteros Wash from Borrego Springs.
