Indio Hills Palms is one of the least known units of the California State Park System, yet it encompasses some of the most dramatic geology in California. Located directly on top of the San Andreas Fault, Indio Hills is home to nearly a dozen palm oases, and some of the most tortured landscape you'll ever see.

This four-wheel-drive trip will visit 3 important oases including Hidden Palms, Pushawalla Palms, and Biskra Palms. There will be 3 different hikes, ranging in length from a half mile to 2.5 miles. The terrain is uneven and moderately rocky, and there is one short, steep hill climb.

Bring hat, plenty of water, lunch, and a camera or binoculars if desired. Meet in the parking lot of the Coachella Valley Preserve on Thousand Palms Road. Take I-10 north past Indio to the Washington St off ramp. Take Washington St north a few miles until it curves west. Just after the curve turn north (right) on Thousand Palms Road and go 2 miles to the entrance (on the left) to the Coachella Valley Preserve. Park in the parking lot and look for the ABI group.
