Join our resident geology expert, Paul Remeika, on a visit into the stony depths of Split Mountain Gorge to see the initial rock record of sedimentation within the Salton Basin. Here, an immense cavalcade of rocks chronicle the Miocene Epoch, when enormous forces of moving water conveyed material from an evolving upland source onto a low basement surface, making for beautifully-preserved aprons of debris freighted with boulders. Add a few landslide deposits, cap it off with marine waters from the Gulf of California, and introduce the Colorado River delta to the area, and what we have is outstanding geology.
Follow Fish Creek Wash on a fantastic journey up-section through a host of sedimentary layerings to Sandstone Canyon. Several short hikes will introduce the participants to the complex history of the badlands. Bring adequate water, lunch, and a camera. 4WD vehicles are required. Meet at the Fish Creek primitive campground at 8:30 a.m.
