Travertine Palms Hike

12/06/2009 - 8:00am
12/06/2009 - 4:00pm
Location:
Meet at the Red Earth Casino on Highway 86

Notice to hikers:  As of 4 pm Saturday, this outing is still a "go" as weather forecasts predict partly cloudy weather, with the rain holding off until Monday.  If things change and it starts raining, feel free to call Sally at 760-525-3312 for an update!

Fee: Members $35; Nonmembers $45

Visit a palm grove that very few visitors get to see, in the remote northeast corner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Numerous paloverde trees along the way provide many opportunities to spot birds, and hardy hikers are rewarded with vistas stretching to the Salton Sea from the palm grove itself.

This is a strenuous hike in Travertine Wash, and participants need to be prepared for a long and rocky trek in order to reach the palm grove.  Total distance is 5-6 miles, and elevation gain is moderate (no more than 500 feet) but there is no trail, and the wash is mostly rocky with a few sandy stretches.  Sturdy hiking boots are a must!

Bring lunch, plenty of water, hat and sunscreen.  Extra snacks and a camera and binoculars are optional, but highly desirable for many people.

We will meet at the Red Earth Casino at 8:00 am and caravan to our departure point.  We should be back to our cars at approximately 4:00 pm.
