Wreckage of Time: The Fish Creek Badlands

03/01/2009 - 8:30am
03/01/2009 - 4:30pm
Location:
Meet at Fish Creek Primitive Campground

Visit the stony depths of Split Mountain Gorge and the initial rock record of sedimentation within the Salton Basin. Here, an immense cavalcade of rocks chronicle the Miocene Epoch, when enormous forces of moving water conveyed material from an evolving upland source onto a low basement surface, making for beautifully-preserved aprons of debris freighted with boulders. Add a few landslide deposits, cap it off with marine waters from the Gulf of California, and the advent of the Colorado River delta, and what we have here is outstanding geology. Follow Fish Creek Wash on a fantastic journey up-section through a host of sedimentary layerings to Sandstone Canyon. Several planned stops and short hikes will introduce the participants to the complex history of the area. Bring adequate water, lunch, and a camera. 4WD vehicles are required.

Fee for each tour: Member $35; Non-member $45
