This hike is part of Archaeology Weekend

Bob Begole was an excellent field archaeologist who saw object relationships that others didn't. Visit one of his favorite site types, lines of rock cairns, and then visit a comparative feature of modern times. This field trip will be in the Yaqui Pass area. We will visit two of the sites that Bob recorded. One is a complex of rock cairns and hunting blinds that are difficult to see -- unless you know how to look. A hypothesis has been recently developed regarding the function of these archaeological features (based on scientific knowledge) and your field trip guide will tell you about it. This site is one of many of this type throughout ABDSP that Bob recorded. The second site is what we call a "new-age site." You will learn why archaeologists call it by this name. It is very photogenic, so bring your cameras.

Both sites require short hikes that are fairly steep. Participants must be sure-footed and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Parking may be a challenge, so be prepared to carpool from ABDSP Visitor Center; all vehicles OK. Bring a hat or other sun protection, water and your sharp eyes. Meet at the far back corner of the VC parking lot at 10 AM sharp. The field trip will last approximately 2.5 hours.

Please call 760-767-4063 to sign up for this field trip. Pre-registration required.
