PCT Hikes along and through Anza-Borrego (Re-visited)

Come celebrate the completion of ABI's series of dayhikes traversing 112 miles on the PCT along and through Anza-Borrego Desert. Our 5-mile hike just north of the ABDSP boundary can be steep and rocky in places, but views of the San Jacinto Mountains and Lookout Mountain, and varied terrain from chaparral to grassy flats, will be our reward. We will hike along the lip of earthquake-jolted Horse Canyon, one of the tributaries draining into Coyote Canyon, on our way to the terminus at the Palms-to-Pines Highway (Route 74) near the base of Toro Peak and the Santa Rosa Mountains. Somewhere en route we will stop for a celebration party. Each participant should bring hors d'oeuvres or finger food to share, as well as your own utensils, plates, cups and beverages.

Meet at dirt parking lot on north side of Rte 74, 1 mile east of Rte 371. There is a PCT sign visible from Rte 74. From the junction of Rts 79 and 371, (see directions from Borrego in PCT #12), drive northeast on Rte 371 for approx. 15 miles, then turn right onto Rte 74. The dirt lot is on the left side of Rte 74, at the PCT sign approx. 1 mile east.

FOR EACH TRIP: Dress for changeable weather conditions and wear hiking boots and layered clothing. Bring snacks, lunch, water, extra water, sun protection, and all essentials. The pace will be moderate and steady, but not fast, with several rest stops to check out flowers, critters, and views. Each hike is one-way with a vehicle shuttle. Each hiker must be willing to participate in a shuttle by offering a ride in his/her vehicle and riding in someone else's vehicle, including on 6-19 miles of slow-going dirt roads. You may want to consider camping in the area the night before.
