PCT Hikes along and through Anza-Borrego (Re-visited)

This 7-mile hike begins in ABDSP and affords panoramic views of the wild northern canyons and creeks that flow down into Coyote Canyon towards the Borrego Valley some 25-30 miles downstream. While passing through a transition zone of red shank (ribbonwood) forests and high desert vegetation, the route undulates and traverses some rocky ravines. Altitude range is approx. 3300-4200 feet. High clearance vehicles are required (and 4WD if dirt roads are muddy).

Meet in the parking lot of Diner 371 at 57331 Route 371 in Anza, about 16 miles northeast of Route 79 and 4 miles southwest of Route 74. For optional breakfast there (add'l $), meet at 7 AM. From Xmas Circle in Borrego Springs, drive up Montezuma Grade (S22) for approx. 19 miles, turn right at Route S2 and go 4.5 miles. Then, turn right onto Route 79 and continue for approx. 25 miles, then right onto Route 371.

FOR EACH TRIP: Dress for changeable weather conditions and wear hiking boots and layered clothing. Bring snacks, lunch, water, extra water, sun protection, and all essentials. The pace will be moderate and steady, but not fast, with several rest stops to check out flowers, critters, and views. Each hike is one-way with a vehicle shuttle. Each hiker must be willing to participate in a shuttle by offering a ride in his/her vehicle and riding in someone else's vehicle, including on 6-19 miles of slow-going dirt roads. People may want to consider camping in the area the night before.
