Cruise up the Colorado River from near Yuma to the upper edge of Picacho State Recreation Area. Camp overnight, then paddle back downriver in a one- or two-person kayak, stopping at sites of interest along the way. Bring your own camping gear, but kayaks and meals will be provided. A day-trip option is also available.
Day 1:
Meet at Fisher’s Landing (near Yuma, Arizona) at 10 am to board a motorized boat for the sightseeing trip upriver, with Supervising Ranger Robin Greene and Ron Knowlton of Yuma River Tours as our guides. Box lunch will be provided at a remote campsite along the river in Picacho SRA. Our goal is the “Red Rock Gates” area, not often included in YRT’s regular tours of the river. In the afternoon, there should be time for an orientation to kayaking, and perhaps a hike, before an al fresco dinner together (provided) at the group camping area in Picacho.
Day 2:
Continental-style breakfast before boarding the kayaks for a 12-mile paddle downstream, with stops along the way for sightseeing (a miner’s cabin from Picacho’s gold-rush days, and ancient petroglyphs). Kayak-friendly snacks will be provided for the trip back to Fisher’s Landing, where your car and your camping gear will be waiting. There is a restaurant at Fisher’s Landing for meals (on your own, if desired) before heading home.
