On this all-day trip we will explore some of the many fascinating and beautiful places hiding just off the track. This portion of the Colorado Desert, which lies east of the old Algodones Sand Dunes (more recently known as the Imperial Sand Dunes), is infrequently visited, not well known, and definitely off the beaten track.

Our first stop will be a view across the dunes, followed by a visit to a working, open-pit gold mine. We'll take short walks through multi-colored hills of volcanic ash and a cobble stone slot canyon. Our final stop will be in the Palo Verde Mountains where we can hunt for vein agate, which is permitted by the BLM.

Please arrive with a FULL TANK OF GAS, lunch, plenty of water, sturdy walking shoes/boots and a camera. Carpooling will be encouraged so that fuel cost can be shared. Three short, easy, off-trail walks will involve a bit of rock scrambling and hill climbing. Level 2 hike

If you are not a US citizen, please bring your passport as we will drive through a border patrol inspection station.
