01/07/2012 - 8:00am
01/07/2012 - 5:00pm
Location:
Meet at ABDSP Visitor Center flagpole

Leader: Paul Johnson
$70 / $60 for ABF members

Level: Moderate, 3 short, off-trail walks with some rock scrambling and hill climbing

Join Paul Johnson for an all-day trip to explore some of the many fascinating and beautiful places along this scenic route. This portion of the Colorado Desert, which lies east of the Algodones Sand Dunes (more recently known as the Imperial Sand Dunes), is infrequently visited, not well known, and definitely off the beaten track.

Our first stop will be a view across the dunes, followed by a stop at the dramatic south end of the Chocolate Mountains. We'll take short walks through multi-colored hills of volcanic ash and a cobblestone slot canyon. Our final stop will be in the Palo Verde Mountains where we can hunt for vein agate, which is permitted by the BLM.

Please arrive with a FULL TANK OF GAS, lunch, plenty of water, sturdy walking shoes/boots and a camera. 4WD, high clearance vehicles recommended. Carpooling will be encouraged so that fuel cost can be shared.

If you are not a US citizen, please bring your passport as we will drive through a border patrol inspection station.

Limited to 16 participants.

THIS TRIP IS SOLD OUT AND IS WAIT-LIST ONLY. CALL 760-767-4063 TO BE ADDED TO THE WAIT-LIST.
