Hike Leader: Scott Turner, San Diego and Orange County writer for Modern Hiker
$15 / $10 for ABF Members
*Free for new members in the last 3 months
Join ABF and Modern Hiker for a special collaborative Hikes & Hops! For the first time we are headed to the southern area of the Park, making transportation easier for our San Diego friends. Mountain Palm Springs features several groves of the native California fan palm, as well as a grove of the rare elephant tree. This easy-to-moderate hike (about 2-3 miles) will visit several palm groves tucked into serene oases. There will also be a side trip to Torote Bowl, which features a grove of elephant trees as well as great views over the corrugated landscape of the Carrizo Badlands. While the trail is generally easy to follow, there are a few steep and rocky sections to add a little spice to the hike.
Bring: Water, lunch, snacks, clothing suitable for fall in the desert and a chair
Meet: Mt Palm Springs turnoff on Hwy S2. From I-8, exit on S2 at Ocotillo. Go northwest on S2 for about 15 miles to the signed Mountain Palm Springs Campground entrance and follow a short dirt road to the campground. From North County, drive to Julian and follow Hwy 78 west about 12 miles to the junction with S2. Turn south and drive 30 miles to the entrance of Mountain Palm Springs. Facilities available at the campground.
Modern Hiker is Southern California’s most-read hiking blog. Founded in L.A. by Casey Schreiner in 2006, the site has since grown to include detailed trail information all across the Southwest. The site is a recommended hiking resource in Lonely Planet guides and was recently named one of the country’s Top 10 Hiking Blogs by USA Today. This year, Scott Turner has spearheaded an extensive expansion of coverage in San Diego County, following thousands of miles of exploration in the county and beyond. Scott looks forward to sharing his passion for hiking, meeting other outdoors enthusiasts, and all things hops-related.
Hikes & Hops with Anza-Borrego Foundation
Good scenery, good beer, good company
Hikes & Hops connects people with two things in common -- a love of Anza-Borrego and craft beer. Hikes & Hops is a social hike series in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and a series of craft brewery happy hours throughout Southern California. Join us for a hike and a beer, or let us come to you for a brewery event!
**This event includes the consumption of alcohol. Families with children are welcome if they can keep up with the group or be carried. ABF may request photo ID for any participant who looks 30 and under. Only those over the age of 21 will be allowed to participate in the “hops” portion of the event. Be responsible when drinking. Camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is encouraged and there are several hotels in Borrego Springs. At the very least, please visit one of our Borrego Partner restaurants for a good meal before heading home.
Join our MeetUp group for upcoming events.
