Leader: Mike Wells, ABF Board Member and Retired ABDSP Superintendent
Fee: $20 / $15 for ABF Members; 1 HH/BB free for new members in the last 3 months
This hike will begin at the end of the Pinyon Wash primitive road. At the beginning of the hike, two dry waterfalls must be negotiated, which we will help each other through. This will require use of the hands as well as feet. After that the hike is up a shallow, gently inclined slope. After a mile and a half we reach Harper Flat, where we will see some Native American morteros and may see bighorn sheep as well as other wildlife.
At the end of our hike, we will have a chance to sample some fantastic brews from Nickel Beer Co in Julian!
Meet: The entry to the primitive road is on the south side of Highway 78 approximately 5 miles east of Tamarisk Grove. The drive up Pinyon Wash is mainly over packed sand. Four or all-wheel drive is recommended.
Bring: water (at least a liter), sunscreen, hat, binoculars, a chair for the end, and camera. In a few places we have to squeeze past some cats claw so our hike leader recommends long sleeves and pants.
Hikes & Hops and Bikes & Brews with Anza-Borrego Foundation
Good scenery, good beer, good company
Hikes & Hops and Bikes & Brews connect people with two things in common -- a love of Anza-Borrego and craft beer. Hikes & Hops is a social hike series in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, with Bikes & Brews being the same but with mountain and road bike rides, and a series of craft brewery happy hours throughout Southern California. Join us for a hike and a beer, a bike and a brew or let us come to you for a brewery event!
**This event includes the consumption of alcohol. Families with children are welcome if they can keep up with the group or be carried. ABF may request photo ID for any participant who looks 30 and under. Only those over the age of 21 will be allowed to participate in the “hops” portion of the event. Be responsible when drinking. Camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is encouraged and there are several hotels in Borrego Springs. At the very least, please visit one of our Borrego Partner restaurants for a good meal before heading home.
