How You Can Help
|
Hot Topics Protecting the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is not as simple as it sounds. Occasionally issues arise that pull the attention away from the day-to-day work of preserving the Park, and require people to defend the space they have designated to be untouched.
"Wilderness needs no defense, only more defenders." THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIGILANCE Sunrise PowerlinkSan Diego Gas & Electric's proposed Sunrise Powerlink route through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
We have received many inquiries from people who would like to know and do more. You can learn more and track the Powerlink project by monitoring the California Public Utilities Commission's website at www.cpuc.ca.gov. Click on the link for the Sunrise Powerlink. You may also view the official statement of California State Parks and opinions by other stakeholders by visiting the Center for Biological Diversity website at http://actionnetwork.org/BIODIVERSITY/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=7085605.
Like to help out with a Donation? HOW MUCH IS THE PARK WORTH? In the Park’s 75th anniversary year, it is being threatened by the Sunrise Powerlink. We need to preserve this Park for future generations. Parks are meant to be “Forever.” Park supporter Denis Trafecanty ran a mile for each year that the Park has existed on Friday and Saturday, October 26 and 27, 2007 – 75 miles along the proposed Sunrise Powerlink route – a route that will destroy the integrity of the Park. He ran for 20.5 hours. Show your support for the Park and fight Sunrise Powerlink by making a donation in honor of every mile that Denis ran. Any amount will make a difference. Click here to make a donation online or send your donation to ABFI – Powerlink Fund at P.O. Box 2001, Borrego Springs, CA 92004. You can also call 760-767-0446 and use your credit card to make a donation. Desert Cahuilla Property
Having signatures on paper finalizing the acquisition for State Parks has by no means ended the controversy over this amazing area. The OHV Division, with Parks' Director Ruth Coleman's approval, is planning to keep the Desert Cahuilla area open to motorized vehicle use in the interim period before the environmental review process, required under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), has been followed and a management plan for the area has been completed. This could be for as long as two year.
The next phase of the process requires that the Department of Parks and Recreation initiate an endangered species consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Fish And Game. They have to meet the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act as well as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
