Anza-Borrego Foundation and Nickel Beer Company Join for a Celebration of Conservation

July 6, 2015- Borrego Springs, CA- On Saturday, June 27, Nickel Beer Company was filled with people awaiting the first taste of the Borrego Dark Sky Stout. Tom Nickel, owner and brewer at Nickel Beer Company, worked in collaboration with two Anza-Borrego Foundation donors to create a beer that could reflect the beauty of our desert. The creation was a delicious vanilla oatmeal stout whose dark color and smooth taste is reminiscent of the dark skies for which Anza-Borrego is famous.

Brother and sister Brian and Michelle chose to donate to Anza-Borrego Foundation in this unique way in order to show their love of Anza-Borrego in a way that is unexpected, fresh, and exciting. “We were intrigued by this out-of-the-ordinary opportunity to benefit the Park while including others and having fun,” said Brian.

The Silveys themselves brought a good sized crew of family and friends to the event, we met some brand-new Borrego Springs residents and got the chance to reconnect with some of our desert enthusiasts that sneak away from the blazing summer temperatures.

Anza-Borrego Foundation Executive Director Paige Rogowski spent a few moments thanking our many supporters and updating the crowd on what’s happening in Anza-Borrego during the long summer months. Tom took some time to describe the process he and the Silveys went through to decide what kind of beer to brew and how to do it, with just enough details to satisfy the many home brewers in attendance and leave us brew-newbies wanting to learn more about the craft beer process.

For staff, it was a nice retreat for a cold beer in cooler temperatures, and a great way to be able to stay connected to our supporters at a time when they are less likely to just stop by the office. We’re still busy in summer, working on various land acquisition projects and planning our programs and Park support for the season to come.

If you missed the Tapping Party, you can still show your support for desert conservation here in San Diego’s back country. The weekend of July 25th there are two things going on. The first is our Hikes & Hops with fellow conservation organization Volcan Mountain Foundation, on July 25th. We will be lead on a meandering six-mile hike through their property right near Julian and then meet back at Nickel Beer Company for a pint of refreshing craft beer, including in the cost of registration. For the duration of that weekend, Tom Nickel has agreed to contribute a portion of each pint purchased at Nickel Beer Company to Anza-Borrego Foundation.

So head up to Julian for a day or weekend away July 25-26, and support Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Anza-Borrego Foundation by enjoying a cold craft brew. More event information can be found at www.theABF.org/events.
