Forbidden Canyons of the Carrizo Impact Area

November 11-12, 2016

Instructor: Ernie Cowan

Explore the beauty of the Carrizo Impact Area through the magic of the photographer’s lens! Our first class in the Anza-Borrego: In Focus series explores a unique twist on research using photo documentation. Cowan spent eight years exploring, photographing and mapping the human history, natural history and military history of the area.

The Carrizo Impact Area is still a dangerous and untouched place. For that reason, we will not be able to enter the area*, but a Saturday tour will allow participants to see some spectacular park landscapes and, after a short hike, be at a vantage point overlooking the old bombing range. The visual tour will bring life to the evening lecture the night before and allow participants time to ask questions about this fascinating area, while also enjoying one of the most interesting regions of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

*This tour will not physically visit the Carrizo Impact Area, which is off-limits to the public since 1942 due to the dangers of unexploded ordnance.

Hike Level: Some details have changed - easy walking for short distances. The day will be a 4WD adventure more than a hike.

Bring: Day pack with lunch, water, hiking shoes, hat, sunscreen, and camping chair (optional) to eat lunch in the field.

Meet: Meet at the ABF office for carpooling. High clearance vehicles required; 4WD preferred.
