Discover what makes bats critical components of our desert ecosystem. Dr. Patricia Brown-Berry has conducted bat research for the past 50 years and will introduce participants to the world of bats and techniques used by scientists to study these amazing mammals.
The 3-day class (Friday evening to Sunday noon) includes daytime lectures and nightly field work using ultrasonic bat detectors, mist-netting and night vision equipment to observe wild bats. Registration fee includes lunch on Saturday; participants must provide all other meals.
Dorm-style lodging with shared kitchen is available at the Research Center for $25 per night.
Friday, April 27
5 PM - Class meets at the Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center. Mist nets will be set at dusk over the pup fish pond near Borrego Palm Canyon (unless it’s windy). Class will have an opportunity to observe captured bats and to monitor the bats' ultrasonic signals using "bat detectors."
Saturday, April 28
9 AM - Lecture and PowerPoint presentations
12:00-1:30 PM - Lunch break
1: 30-4:30 PM – Continuing presentations, including echolocation and acoustic detection equipment
4:30-6 PM - Dinner break
6 PM - Depart for another location to mist net bats and record echolocation signals
11 PM - Approximate return to the vehicles
Midnight - return to lodgings
Sunday, April 29
9 AM-1 PM - Discussion of mist net data and evening observations followed by bat videos and presentations on impacts to bats including White Nose syndrome, alternative energy and mine closures. Instructors will remain after class for individual questions.
Bring: Flashlight (headlamp preferred), garden gloves, folding chair for evening mist-netting, notebook and pen. Optional: camera and binoculars.
