Explore the Geology of Mammoth Lakes
Excursion in the Sierras Promises Adventure and Learning
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA
August 10-17, 2008, Anza-Borrego Institute’s Desert Hostel will explore the volcanic activity of the Mammoth Lakes area and its connection to the Anza- Borrego Desert region. The $1,345 program includes lodging, instruction, all activities and most meals. Participants must provide their own transportation. (ABFI members pay $1,275. Memberships start at $25.)
Skilled field geologist Paul Remeika will lead this seven-day exploration of the geology and volcanic history of the spectacular Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, from Lone Pine to Mammoth Lakes. Professional photographer Paul Johnson will offer feedback on photographic technique and composition. Participants will venture into a stunning setting of mountains, forests and lakes ideal for hikers, naturalists, photographers and geology enthusiasts.
Each year, The Institute’s Desert Hostel tour explores a new area of the country and how the geography of that area has impacted the Anza-Borrego region. 2007 tour participants Jim and Marion Jordan, of Newport Beach, plan to attend Desert Hostel again this year. “Paul [Remeika] is an inspirational instructor with a wealth of knowledge. We are looking forward to Paul’s enlightened talks, which make geological events understandable.” This year’s trip examines the dynamic geology in the Eastern Sierras and the catastrophic volcanic eruptions that left their mark as far south as Anza-Borrego. “We plan to attend as many of these tours as we can! The trip exceeded our expectations -- it was unforgettable.”
The week-long excursion is hosted by Anza-Borrego Institute (ABI), the education arm of Anza-Borrego Foundation and Institute (ABFI, a 501(c)(3), the nonprofit partner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park®.) ABI offers year-round programs for students and adults in natural history, science, Native American culture, archaeology, and the arts. Programs offer in-depth explorations with expert instructors. Learning opportunities are extended through youth programs, including fifth grade conservation camps and distance-learning, graduate research scholarships, science symposia and citizen science programs. ABFI has a forty-year legacy of promoting conservation in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding ecological region through land acquisition, education, interpretation, and scientific studies. Proceeds will be used to further the mission of ABFI to conserve the Anza-Borrego Desert region.
