Howie Wier Memorial Conservation Grant

Anza-Borrego Institute would like to congratulate James Michael Heaney, our 2010 Howie Wier Memorial Conservation Grant recipient. Mike is a student in the doctoral program at the University of Florida. He will be studying the systematics and genetics of Nolina in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding region.

Grants of up to $2,000 are awarded anually to assist graduate students conducting field studies in ecology, systematics, evolutionary biology, and conservation biology in the Colorado Desert and Peninsular Range region of southern California.

2010 Howie Wier Grant Application

Harold A. “Howie” Wier (1952-2001) was a native San Diegan and a lifelong naturalist. He worked as a biological consultant and conservation biologist throughout southern California. He was active in the California Native Plant Society, a past President of San Diego Audubon, and a long-time member of the Anza-Borrego Foundation. This grant program was established by Anza-Borrego Institute with the help of Howie’s family, friends, and colleagues as a fitting tribute to Howie’s passion.

Student Entomology Grant

Anza-Borrego Institute would like to congratulate the recipient of the 2009 Entomology Grant for Students, Matthew Van Dam, a student in the doctoral program at the University of California, Berkeley. He will be studying two closely related species of Giant Flower-Loving Flies (Rhaphiomidas) in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

 2010 Begole Archaeological Research Grant

The Begole Archaeological Research Grant (BARG) program is designed to support scientific archaeological research in Colorado Desert District parks and related areas. The BARG is funded through an endowment created by pioneering Anza-Borrego Desert State Park archaeologist, Robert S. Begole. Priority may be given to original research dealing with the earliest periods of prehistory.

• Proposals are due by May 28, 2010
• Recipients will be notified by July 9, 2010

ABDSP Paleontology Society Educational Support Program

The Paleontology Society Educational Support Program provides grant support to its members, State Park staff and scientists and scholars pursuing educational or research activities relevant to paleontology in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and its surrounding region. Applications for grants have no deadline.
