Anza-Borrego Desert State Park® Interpretive Activities are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Events meet at the ABDSP Visitor Center unless otherwise noted. Be aware that there is a $10 Day Use Fee at the Visitor Center.

7:20 a.m. Hawkwatch – A Borrego Springs Phenomenon      2.5 Hours
Why are people looking up into the sky? Join State Park Volunteer Naturalist Terry Hunefeld to discover the fascinating story of migrating Swainson’s Hawks.  We’ll meet at the Visitor Center flagpole (by the parking lot) for a 40-minute program, then caravan to the Hawkwatch site, observe hawk watchers on duty, and see migrating raptors.  We’ll also meet “HawkGuy” Hal Cohen, the Chicago teacher who discovered the hawk migration phenomenon in 2003 and helped put the Borrego Hawkwatch in motion.  Bring binoculars, water and hats.  You will also appreciate a portable chair in case the hawks don’t lift off until after 9 a.m. Limited to 18 participants who must have pre-registered at the Visitor Center or by calling (760) 767-4205.

7:30 a.m. Walk Bird Walk                    1.5 Hours
Join Volunteer Naturalist Ann Keenan for a walk around the Visitor Center vicinity looking for the common birds of our desert. All birding levels welcome. Meet in the Visitor Center parking lot. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Rain cancels.

9:00 a.m. Behind-the-Scenes Tour: Archaeology and Paleontology Laboratories     1.5 Hours
Ever wonder about the rich discoveries being made in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park? Meet in front of the Visitor Center for a walking tour to visit our excellent laboratory facilities. Cost is $25 per person (does not include $10 day use fee per car). Email Anza-Borrego.Tours@parks.ca.gov to reserve or call 760-767-4037 M-F. Tours also offered at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m. Talk  – Bighorn Sheep: Symbol of Desert Wilderness            1 Hour
Join Volunteer Naturalist Tony DeLorenzo to find out about bighorn sheep. Where did they come from? What is their history here in the desert? What are their prospects for the future?

2:00 p.m. Junior Ranger Family Hike – Up a Bajada Wash             2 Hours
Join Park Interpretive Specialist Regina Reiter for a fun family exploration hike along a wash in the bajada just behind the Visitor Center. Find animal homes, soft sand, and other desert wonders.  Water and sunhat are required. Meet in front of the Visitor Center. Children ages 7-12 will earn their Junior Ranger badge. If you have one already, bring your California State Park Junior Ranger logbook!  Please sign up in the Visitor Center before 1 p.m. today!

7:30 p.m. Campfire  – Animal Songs           1 Hour
Join Park Interpretive Specialist Regina Reiter for a lighthearted look at some of the Park animals. Using the sounds of a few of our Park animals, you’ll leave this program with a song in your heart! Meet at the Borrego Palm Canyon Campfire Center.
