We have cancelled the hike due to low registration, but do not fear! We will be rescheduling this Century Circle Hike to this upcoming Fall 2022.

Join ABF board member Dave Van Cleve on Saturday, May 21, for a hike to one of the most unusual areas of the Park: The Lucky 5 Ranch and the Tulloch Ranch, both about 10 miles south of Julian at about 5000′ elevation.

Date:
Saturday May 21, 2022

Time:
9 am – 3 pm

Meet Location:
Sunrise Highway parking lot, just south of mile marker 34.5 on Highway S-1

Your Hike Leader:
Dave Van Cleve is not only a board member; he is also a retired Anza-Borrego Desert State Park superintendent and played an active role in the acquisition of both these beautiful ranches. He currently serves as the chair of the Land Committee of ABF; the committee responsible for acquiring inholdings and transferring them to the state park.

Hike Details:
This hike will not only remind us of the incredible biodiversity of the Park but will take us to an area that does not seem like a traditional desert. In addition to discussions about that region’s natural and cultural history, Dave will explain the land program at ABF and what the future might hold.

We are breaking this day into two hikes, with the second being optional. The first hike is through the amazing Lucky 5 Ranch, which straddles County Highway S-1. We will hike an easy 2.5 miles through the Lucky 5, occasionally stopping to admire the views and talk about the philosophy behind the importance of the ranch to conservation biology principles. There are a couple of stretches rated as moderate, but we will take it slow. We will also do a beautiful loop hike for about two hours, part of which is along the Pacific Crest Trail.

After this hike, you can call it a day, or you are welcome to join Dave for a second hike at the Tulloch Ranch, which straddles State Route 79 south of Julian. Tulloch will be an up-and-back hike of about a mile each way. It is rated “easy” and will take just over an hour. We will walk through pine forests and admire the post-fire regeneration of the magnificent black oaks. We will take a short side trip to see Morteros, where the Kumeyaay processed acorns and a metate used for seeds.

Logistics
We will meet at the Sunrise Highway parking lot, just south of mile marker 34.5 on Highway S-1, at 9 am. The parking lot offers a “vault” toilet, and the loop trail leaves from the parking lot and returns to the same spot. If you wish to join the second optional hike, we will provide directions then.

In addition to bringing your standard hike necessities (water, sunscreen, hiking poles, etc.), please check the weather. We will be at the 5000′ elevation, which is considerably cooler than Borrego Springs and San Diego and is often windy; we will send weather reminders as this date approaches.

Please bring your lunch; some snacks and sparkling water will be provided. Be sure to bring plenty of water with you and stay hydrated. The approximate end time will be 3 pm.

Pre-registration is required and is limited to 25 members, so make sure to register soon! Must be a Century Circle Member to join.
