ABDSP District Paleontologist Dr. Lyndon K. Murray

The Colorado Desert of southeastern California was not always as it appears today; a forbidding and stark landscape populated mostly with medium to small creatures hiding by day and active at night. This was once a verdant and vibrant terrain – an environment of rivers and streams, lakes, woodlands and savanna; home to herds of large and giant grazers and carnivores, plus a wide variety of smaller vertebrates and invertebrates. Before that it held an inland ocean teeming with great varieties of sea-life. The key to understanding and engaging this prehistoric world is paleontology, the study of the fossilized remains of that ancient life.
