Sentenac Cienega Restoration Symposium

California State Parks and Anza-Borrego Foundation invite you to join us at a two-day event where researchers will share their findings and restoration recommendations for Sentenac Cienega, one of two vital wetlands in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It will be a weekend filled with learning through lectures and field tours at the Cienega, located about 30 minutes from Borrego Springs.

California State Parks, Colorado Desert District (CDD) is working to develop a wetland restoration strategy for the Sentenac Cienega wetlands in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park located at Scissors Crossing, where San Felipe Rd, the Pacific Crest Trail and Highway 78 meet.

A wetland in the desert?? YES, and it is home to many unique and diverse species. After two years of research, Park staff and a team of researchers are ready to present their research findings, as well as recommendations for a future restoration strategy.

Presenters will include researchers from UC Irvine, University of San Diego and State Parks who will present on their studies which focus on hydrogeology, vegetation, birds, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrate species. These baseline studies will inform us on the current health of the wetland and guide the restoration strategy.

Field Tours

Afternoon tours will visit the research field areas of the speakers, allowing you to learn more about the process of gathering data for the projects, and see Sentenac Cienega up close and personal. You will get to see an overview of the watershed and hear about this unique, dynamic and diverse ecosystem located in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
