6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Presentation

7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Workshop  (End time is approximate)

Cost: Non-member – $65.00, ABF Member – $50.00, Student – $25.00

Description: Join photographer and naturalist, Chuck Houser, for an evening workshop on photographing the night sky. There is no better place to photograph the night sky than Anza-Borrego, where light pollution is minimal, and the sky is vast. Chuck will present about what it takes to photograph the night sky and share photos and details of the preparation that went into his photographing the 2017 eclipse. He’ll also talk about what you need to be prepared to photograph the upcoming solar eclipse this April.

The second half of the evening will be a hands-on workshop where Chuck will help you set up and guide you through photographing the moon, Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way, and other objects. Chuck will share tips on how to prepare your equipment, how to focus, create long exposures, and where in the sky to look.

And you don’t need expensive gear to take beautiful photos of the night sky! You can even capture images with a modern smartphone. However, we recommend a camera that allows for manual functionality (we’ll discuss how to control the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed) and a sturdy tripod that won’t move with the wind. Any other equipment is welcome but optional (e.g. wide-angle lens, shutter-release cable, etc).

Location: UC Irvine Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center: 401 Tilting T Dr, Borrego Springs, CA 92004

The lecture and workshop will be held at the UC Irvine Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center. We’ll be inside the Great Room for the presentation and then step outside on the large patio that overlooks the Biodiversity Reserve and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
