Located in southern California, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. With over 800,000 acres of land to explore, the park is home to an array of different wildlife species, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, and red-tailed hawks. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the animals that call Anza-Borrego home.
One of the most iconic animals in Anza-Borrego is the bighorn sheep. These animals are experts at climbing and can often be seen scaling steep cliffs in search of food. Bighorn sheep are herbivores and primarily eat grasses and shrubs. During the summer months, they will also eat fruit and leaves to supplement their diet. Bighorn sheep are relatively solitary creatures but will come together in groups during the breeding season.
Mule deer are another common sight in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. These animals get their name from their large ears, which resemble those of a mule. Mule deer are herbivores and primarily eat plants, nuts, and berries. In the winter months, when food is scarce, they will also eat twigs and bark. Mule deer are social creatures and live in herds made up of does (females) and their fawns (offspring). bucks (males) generally live alone or in small groups with other bucks outside of the breeding season.
Red-tailed hawks are one of the most common raptors in North America. These birds of prey can often be seen soaring above open areas in search of food. Red-tailed hawks primarily eat small mammals like rodents or squirrels but will also eat reptiles, fish, and even other birds. These hawks build their nests out of sticks and twigs and generally lay two to three eggs per clutch.
The mountain lion is the largest cat in North America and can be found in a wide range of habitats, including the deserts of Anza-Borrego. Mountain lions are carnivores and primarily eat deer, though they will also eat other small mammals, reptiles, and birds. These animals are generally solitary creatures but will come together during the breeding season. Female mountain lions typically give birth to two to three cubs per litter.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is home to an incredible array of wildlife species. Next time you’re planning a trip to California, be sure to add this state park to your itinerary!
