80 Million Years of Southern California Geology (In-Person Seminar)
This lecture takes you on an epic journey that begins around 80 million years ago, unveiling how Plate Tectonics has shaped the dramatic landscape of Southern California. From there, we’ll dive into the fascinating rock types and minerals that define the Anza-Borrego region and its surrounding areas. Fast forward to 30 million years ago, and we’ll explore the emergence of the San Andreas Fault System and the birth of the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez—a pivotal event in the region’s geological history. Along the way, we’ll also explore six distinct desert environments, offering a comprehensive look at the forces that have sculpted this stunning desert landscape.
