Adventure Hike: The Thimble

Embark on an exhilarating adventure with us as we hike to the iconic Thimble in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park! This 5.5-mile trek will challenge you with an elevation gain of around 2,000 feet, featuring both ascents and descents. We’ll begin at Ranchita Summit North and journey past Chimney Rock, making our way to the Thimble. At the summit, a thrilling scramble awaits, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views that will leave you in awe. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable outdoor experience!

Who should attend: 

  • Experienced hikers only who have completed at least an intermediate-level hike with us 

 

Please bring:  

  • At least three liters of water and electrolytes 
  • Snacks/lunch 
  • Sturdy hiking shoes 
  • Hiking poles (optional) 
  • Hiking gloves 
  • Layers 
  • Sun protection 

 

Date: February 22, 2025 

Time: 6:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (End time is approximate) 

Location: Meet at the ABF office (587 Palm Canyon Dr. #122, Borrego Springs, CA 92004 in The Mall next to Kendall’s Café). We will then carpool/caravan to the hike starting point. 

 

Cost: 

ABF Member: $35 

Non-Member: $45 

Student: $20 

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available for those with financial hardship. If you’d like to request a scholarship, please reach out to [email protected] with a two–three paragraph description about why you’d like to attend this program and your need for a scholarship.  

 

Hike Leader: Sicco Rood is the Facilities and Research Coordinator at the Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center. In his free time, he enjoys hiking cross-country in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and photography. 

 

 

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation requests must be received seven days before the event if you wish to receive a refund. Programs may be cancelled due to inclement weather or low attendance. If ABF cancels a program, we will issue a full refund or credit.
