Astrophotography Workshop: Aurora & Geminid Meteor Shower
Have you heard about the strong aurora and passing comet in the news recently? Have you been seeing everyone’s posts on social media, but feel like you’re missing out? Then join us for an evening astrophotography workshop on auroras and meteor showers, where you’ll learn to capture these events yourself!
Photographer and geologist Chuck Houser will first lead a presentation on what it takes to photograph the night sky. He’ll share photos he’s taken of northern lights and other celestial events and provide tips on how to achieve your own. You’ll then join Chuck for a hands-on workshop outside where he’ll help you set up and try photographing the night sky yourself! You’ll learn how to prepare your equipment, focus your camera, create long exposures, and find the right location to set up your camera. Expect to see some Geminid meteors!
There’s no better place to photograph the night sky than Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where light pollution is minimal and the sky is vast. For this workshop, we recommend a camera that allows for manual functionality (we’ll discuss how to control the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed) and a sturdy tripod that won’t move with the wind. Any other equipment is welcome but optional (e.g. wide-angle lens, shutter-release cable, etc).
