Chill Hike – Calcite Mine

Join ABF for a chill hike on the Calcite Mine Trail! This 3.7 mile (685’ elevation gain) out-and-back trail will take you along an active jeep road to a wash where we will briefly explore a slot canyon. We’ll then make our way to a WWII-era calcite mine, which was put into emergency operation after Pearl Harbor and was the only operating calcite mine in the U.S. While no mine structures are still present, there’s plenty of calcite to see and some fun exploring opportunities. We’ll be rewarded with remarkable views of the Salton Sea, Borrego Valley and the Badlands. There will also be time to scramble to some wind caves and to the top of a large rock outcropping for a better view to the north end of the sea. Parking at the trailhead will either be along the berm of the S-22 or in a small dirt lot, which is down a short embankment along the S-22.

Trip Leader:

Todd Linke is a resident of San Diego and just finished his 25th year in education, 23 of them with the Grossmont Union High School District. Todd grew up in Ohio and has been exploring, hiking and camping since he was a child. His earliest outdoor memories include hiking in the caves in Hocking Hills, sailing on Lake Atwood, swimming in Lake Erie, and camping at the seaside at Myrtle Beach. Todd fell in love with the desert several years ago and makes the 2-hour drive to the park every chance he gets. He has visited the park over 100 times and has hiked and driven many of its well-known and more obscure trails and roads, but as always discovering more. Todd brings his love for science and his passion for the desert to any excursion in the park.
