Coyotes of the Southwest (Webinar)

How do you feel when you lock eyes with a coyote? Is it fear, fascination, or a bit of both? Join Anza-Borrego Foundation for a captivating webinar, Coyotes of the Southwest, designed to challenge the misconceptions and illuminate the remarkable lives of these misunderstood creatures. This session is hosted by Anza-Borrego Foundation’s own Outdoor Educator, Annie DeFino, who has a decade of experience leading groups in the outdoors and educating on a wide range of scientific topics. On her outdoor adventures, Annie observed the incredible adaptations of coyotes which led her to spend countless hours diving into books and resources to better understand these fascinating creatures.

Sharing about the extensive research done by researchers and organizations, like Project Coyote, and traditional ecological knowledge from local indigenous groups, Annie will illuminate on the integral role coyotes play in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. She will discuss the Southwest coyote population explosion in both the desert and urban areas, human interactions with coyotes, and practical tips for coexistence with those who call Anza-Borrego Desert State Park their home. You’ll leave this webinar having explored the complex social behaviors, intelligence, and adaptability of coyotes, and with a list of resources to continue your learning. Whether you’re a seasoned desert explorer or simply curious about wildlife, this webinar will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the resilient and resourceful coyotes of the Southwest. Reserve your spot and change the way you see one of nature’s most intriguing animals!

About the Presenter:

Annie DeFino has been facilitating as an Outdoor Educator for over ten years. Originally residing in New Jersey, she found a love of the outdoors while mushroom hunting in the freshwater marshes. The minute Annie experienced the Sonoran Desert (and noted the desert has a staunchly lower amount of horse flies) she knew her calling was to educate others about the importance and wonder of the desert. She received a Bachelor’s degree at Prescott College in both Psychology and Environmental Science. Since then, she’s moved to Pasadena and has taught science in outdoor settings all around California. From Big Sur to Anza Borrego, she has passionately educated ages young and old about water in the west, geology, fauna, flora, and most importantly, life in the desert. Currently Annie focuses on risk mitigation as a Course Director for a northern-based outdoor education company and enjoys facilitating outdoor events for Anza-Borrego.  In her free time, she escapes into the backcountry or can be found reading about desert ecology at her local coffee shop.
