Description:
Have you ever been interested in advancing scientific knowledge but you’re not technically a “scientist?” You’re in luck! There are many ways for the layperson to engage in the scientific process and assist major research. Join the California Naturalist and Anza-Borrego: in Focus programs for its second webinar of the season, “From Spectator to Scientist: Making Science Accessible to All,” a webinar all about Participatory Science (aka Citizen Science)! In this webinar, our speaker, Lisa Marun, will discuss engaging the public in scientific research, including formulating research questions and collecting and analyzing data. Lisa will discuss the logistics, demographics, science and geographical perspectives of how to carry out successful participatory science projects, and she’ll discuss the role of participatory science for researchers, the public observer and the conservation of nature. Lisa will speak about the City Nature Challenge, a global effort where communities collaborate to share observations of nature, and she’ll highlight one important tool used — iNaturalist — an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. The online lecture will be followed by an opportunity for Q&A.
This event serves as a foundation of knowledge for the California Naturalist in the Desert course.

About the Presenter:
Lisa Marun is awed and inspired by the natural world. She believes that everyone deserves to live a healthy, safe and enriched life. She has worked in the environmental arena for over 20 years in roles that focus on the scientific, legal, political and social aspects that are intertwined with environmental challenges. Lisa works to empower others to become better environmental stewards by leading and engaging people to live in a way that nurtures the communities and environments they care about. Through her involvement in the City Nature Challenge, she hopes to contribute to our collective knowledge and conservation of local biodiversity and encourage deep connections with the natural world.
