January Member Hike- Hornblend Canyon

Join us for a hike in Hornblende Canyon led by Board Member & retired District Superintendent of the Colorado Desert District, Dave Van Cleve! The canyon is named after the dominant rock found here, hornblende-biotite tonalite, an intrusive igneous rock consisting of feldspar, quartz, mica and/or amphibole minerals (like hornblende). We will hike to a mine site where we might find tailings from the gold or tourmaline prospectors. The 2-mile out & back hike is rated moderate because of dry waterfalls that require a bit of rock scrambling.

About Dave Van Cleve: Dave enjoyed a 31-year career with California State Parks, including assignments as a ranger, park ecologist, Superintendent of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and District Superintendent of the Colorado Desert District. He joined the Foundation’s Board in 1989. He has long believed that one of the key roles of ABF is to ensure that its land conservation work plays a vital role in sustaining biodiversity, ecological complexity, and climate change adaptability. He enjoys bicycling, hiking, upright bass, singing, and building wooden toys for my grandchildren.
