What to Expect

  • A moderate 4-mile roundtrip night hike on a dirt road (we will not enter the slot canyon)

  • 685 feet of elevation gain with steady climbing & unique sandstone formations

  • Stunning views of desert badlands, the Salton Sea, and starry skies

  • Fascinating stories about WWII history and how this was the only calcite mine ever operated in the U.S. — activated as part of a top-secret wartime effort after Pearl Harbor.

  • Cooler evening desert temperatures—bring layers

Location: ABF store in The Mall in Borrego Springs (587 Palm Canyon Dr. #110, Borrego Springs, CA 92004)

  • 2 liters of water  
  • Layers 
  • A headlamp  
  • Hiking shoes  
  • Snacks  

Cost: 

ABF Member: $20

Hike Leader: Matt McArdle has a B.S.in biology from UC San Diego and loves natural history, science, and exploring the outdoors. He first visited Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in 2009 and has since spent many weekends exploring the Park’s trails. In his professional life, he’s worked as a science writer, a science educator, and in marketing communications for various technology-focused companies, including medical devices, irrigation management, and laboratory equipment. Matt is certified as both a California Naturalist and Wilderness First Responder.
