Night Hike: Pictograph Trail

Join us for an unforgettable night hike along the Pictograph Trail! This 2.5-mile roundtrip adventure through the Little Blair Valley Cultural Preserve will take us to a remarkable ancient Kumeyaay pictograph site. We’ll traverse a canyon trail under the moonlight, eventually reaching a boulder adorned with well-preserved rock art. As we gaze up at the stars, we’ll delve into some of the rich Kumeyaay stories connected to the night sky before heading back to the trailhead. This hike will be guided by a certified Wilderness First Responder.

Please bring: 2 liters of water, layers, a headlamp, hiking shoes, and snacks.

Please note that AWD is recommended to reach the trailhead. Carpooling may be available.

  • Experience ancient history under the stars — Hike beneath the moonlight to a sacred Kumeyaay pictograph site and connect with the stories etched into stone and sky.

  • Rediscover your sense of wonder — Trade the glow of screens for the desert’s natural nightlight, where stargazing and storytelling awaken curiosity and calm.

  • Make it meaningful — Your registration directly supports outdoor access and education for all, so every step helps others experience the desert too.

Hike Leader:

Annie DeFino has been doing Outdoor Education for over ten years. Originally residing in New Jersey, she found a love of the outdoors mushroom hunting in the marshes. She was educated at Lesley University in Boston Massachusetts and promptly moved to a warmer area. The minute Annie experienced the Sonoran Desert she knew her calling was to educate others about the importance of the desert. Since then, she’s moved to Pasadena and has taught science in outdoor settings all around California. From Big Sur to Anza Borrego, she has passionately educated ages young and old about water in the west, geology, fauna, flora, and most importantly, life in the desert. Currently Annie is a Course Director for a northern based outdoor education company and enjoys facilitating outdoor events for Anza Borrego.
