Volunteer Spotlight: Omar Espinoza
Volunteers bring Anza-Borrego to life in countless ways. They share their time, curiosity, knowledge, and care to help others experience the Park safely and meaningfully.
This month, we are grateful to recognize Omar Espinoza, whose love of the outdoors and willingness to step outside his comfort zone have made volunteering with Anza-Borrego Foundation a rewarding part of his life.
Helping on the Trail
One of Omar’s favorite volunteer experiences this season has been helping hikers who have had an unfortunate encounter with cholla.
“Being out on the trails helping remove cholla spines from hikers has probably been my favorite volunteer experience,” Omar shared. “It’s really satisfying seeing the relief once the spines are out and the pain starts to go away.”
It is a simple act of service that can completely change someone’s day in the Park. For Omar, it is also part of a larger appreciation for everything the desert holds.
“I also enjoy everything around plants, wildlife, and everything in between.”
Learning While Giving Back
Omar chooses to volunteer with ABF because it allows him to combine his love of being outdoors with the opportunity to support the Park.
“I love spending time outdoors, and volunteering with ABF allows me to do that while contributing to the Park and learning something new every time I am out there.”
That spirit of curiosity is at the heart of volunteering in Anza-Borrego. Each day in the desert offers something new to notice, understand, and appreciate—and each volunteer experience creates another opportunity to care for the place in return.
Growing Through Service
Volunteering has also helped Omar grow personally.
“Volunteering with ABF has helped me step out of my comfort zone,” he said. “It feels great to constantly learn and know that I am contributing to something positive.”
His experience is a reminder that volunteering is not only about what we give. It can also help us build confidence, form new connections, discover new interests, and develop a deeper relationship with the natural world.
An Invitation to Join
For anyone who has considered volunteering with ABF but has not yet taken the first step, Omar offers simple advice:
“I would encourage them to just try it. It is a welcoming way to spend time outdoors, discover stunning landscapes, and meet new people.”
